So it’s the morning after St. Patrick’s Day and chances are you feel awful. I really hope you feel awful because you over indulged with some beverages and not because you had to do the walk of shame on a week (and work) day. If so, maybe you should reevaluate things. And do this quiz.
Anyway, you feel like shit and you don’t want to feel like shit anymore. Here is a list of some hangover remedies you can easily do at home.
Also before you read this, I’m obviously not a doctor, just someone who drinks sometimes and shares some knowledge. Use some critical thinking skills.
Before/During Drinking Hangover Remedies:
Don’t be so cheap that you just drink a bunch to get wasted quickly. Eat something! Great options to fill your tummy are carbs and veggies (like my pizza dip). If you eat healthy fats like nuts, avocados, or eggs, it’ll slow down your body’s absorption of alcohol. But if you’re hanging out with other people, don’t eat stuff that will give you gross burps. People will notice.
Drink Water (..duh!)
Balance your beverages with water. Easier said than done, but try to follow each pint/drink with a glass of water. You will be glad in the morning. But also, drink some fruit juice too – it helps metabolize the booze faster – just don’t go overboard on the sugar.
Mixing is giant no no. Just pick to one type of drink or one type of shot. Brown/darker drinks give you a harsher hangover, if you stick to clearer beverages like vodka or gin, the hangover is lesser (apparently). And watch out for the sugary types of drinks. As much as you want to drink a bottle of Vex all night for $5, you will pay for it in the morning and potentially get diabetes. Plus, Vex? Seriously?
Drink a glass of water before bed and leave another next to your bed. Also, if you take any kind of headache pill, Advil or Ibuprofen (basically no name Advil) is best. Do not take Tylenol or Aspirin because they do not mix well with alcohol…something to do with stomach bleeding and liver damage.
Put Your Phone Away
Drunk dials or texts might be a good idea at the time but in reality, they are never. Put your phone more than arm’s reach. It’ll also save it when you drunkenly knock your glass of water over.
Morning After Hangover Remedies:
Alcohol gives you a terrible sleep. Literally just sleep it off, with a bottle of water next to your bed.
Cup of Joe
No, this isn’t something perverted relating to your walk of shame. Have a cup of coffee. Alcohol expands your blood vessels which contributes to that killer head ache you have. Drinking some coffee will constrict your blood vessels.
No, I don’t mean more booze! Alcohol (and coffee) are diuretics meaning you will pee a lot. Replenish your body and flush out the hangover with lots of water. Sports drinks like Gatorade are good too, just again, be careful with the sugar. That’s what got you in this state in the first place!
If you want to skip the sports drink, pickle juice is a good alternative as it contains water, sodium, and vinegar (just like a sports drink, minus the vinegar). It helps prevent dehydration. Maybe try out a pickleback at the bar.
A hangover is in part, a ginormous sugar crash, so balance that out with a hearty breakfast (or lunch). Eggs are egg-cellent (ha!) as they provide you with the nutrients you need. Bananas are a great snack too, especially since you’ll be low on potassium.
Legit soup with real broth is a great option too and it’ll help with any heartburn you have. What is non-legit soup? That diarrhea in a cup they serve at fast food places. If you think they’re using real chicken or beef bones, then you must still be drunk.
Diffuse Essential Oils
Do you have essential oils at home and a diffuser? Put in a few drops of lemon, orange, and/or peppermint to help you feel better in the morning.
Don’t have a diffuser? Put a few drops on your hand and breathe them in or you can mix these essential oils with a carrier oil (grapeseed, olive, almond) and massage into your skin.
Don’t have essential oils? Then you’re SOL on this one, my friend.
