When I tell people I like to craft, sometimes people say, I wish I had the time. First of all, get your time management in check. Second, with ideas like this, you basically have to be the octo-mom to not have the time to do it.
I stumbled across a few recipes for hot chocolate mix online and it’s pretty simple to make. And when you look at the ingredients of the store-bought mix, you’ll see that making it yourself is probably a better option.
It’s literally only a couple of ingredients and can be stored for the whole season in the cupboard. All you need is some decent cocoa powder (I think the rouge type is best), sugar, and a pinch of cayenne. Rouge is a bit more expensive but I bought mine at Bulk Barn and used a coupon (score!). And if you’re thinking, “What cayenne? Are you drunk?!”
First of all, no I am not but this would probably be a funnier blog post if I was. And second, the cayenne is meant to be a tiny amount that enhances the chocolatey-ness. It’s like when you add salt to dessert baking.
If you’d like, you can add in some cinnamon and/or some grated nutmeg to the mix.
It’s so easy and even a great gift idea. My dad loves hot chocolate and I made this for him.
Hot Chocolate Mix Recipe
½ cup of cocoa powder
⅓ cup of sugar
pinch of cayenne
optional: 1 tsp cinnamon and grated nutmeg
Directions: put it in a mason jar and shake. Literally. You have no reason not to make this.
If you’ve been having a tough day or week, or just in the mood to amp it up, feel free to add some Bailey’s or Kahlua. You can sit back and unwind from the week….better make it a double.
