The weather is finally turning around here and being more spring-like and less depressing. I hate when people are like “Oh I love winter”. Yea? You do. Well here’s a shovel and feel free to have a gay ole time shoveling my 6 car driveway. Not much for back-breaking labour? Then maybe hold these two icicles attached to my body that are called hands. What do you have to say for yourself now?
Outside of my whining about the snow and how cold I am, this past winter/early spring has been a total bitch to my scalp. I don’t know if it’s because I’m now in my 30s and no longer ‘young and carefree’, but the dry heat from inside mixed with the frigid temps has made my scalp dryer than an old clam.
It can get so itchy and then it looks like the ski slopes are on my head. For those of you saying ew, stop because I’m sure at some point in your life you have and will do gross things like toot and poop, so spare me on the dry scalp flakes.
I tried switching shampoos but after doing some research I found that regular store brand shampoos can just make it worse, so I switched to fancy, health food aisle, sulfate-free, paraben-free, whatever-free shampoo. I also use my homemade kind but sometimes I get lazy and don’t make it for a while.
But I was noticing my scalp was still dry after a few days. I only wash it 1-2x per week so it was really annoying the last couple days (for those saying ew again, please refer to above….also you’re not supposed to wash your hair a lot so :P)
I ended up researching some oils that would be good for my hair and noticed that when I put this concoction on my scalp, my scalp was good. This hair and scalp oil also nourished my hair, especially my ends.
Hair and Scalp Oil
¼ cup oil (avocado, jojoba, shea)
10 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops rosemary essential oil
5 drops tea tree essential oil
In a non-metallic bowl or bottle, add in all the ingredients. Mix. And now you have hair and scalp oil. Apply to your scalp and leave on for 10-30 min. If you don’t have all of the essential oils, that’s ok.
I put this in a bowl and then apply/massage into my scalp with my fingertips. Make sure you use your fingertips and not scratching up your head with your nails. Blood will not help the scalp flakes. I leave it on my head while I take a bath for as long as I can and then I shampoo my hair twice. You’ll feel when you’ve washed out the oil. If you have thick, lustrous hair, you might need to shampoo 1-2 more times.
If you make extra, store in a cool, dark place. Happy scalping!
